| Bagel's Story

When we first met Bagel, we fell in love with this cute and fluffy dog with buck teeth who treads on the ground lightly when she walks. When we saw the environment she was living in, it broke our hearts.

There was a dirty water bowl, leftover kibble that had been sitting around for days, a small brick dog house that could shelter Bagel from the rain, but often not from direct sunlight. Being chained to the dog house also meant she did not have much space to move about or hide in. During hot days, Bagel could only squeeze in a small gap next to the dog house, to escape the hot sun.

TSPCA inspectors knocked on the owner's door to talk to him about Bagel’s condition. They told us that the dog was originally his brother’s dog but because he could no longer care for Bagel, he stepped into care for her and has been doing so for the past 5-6 years . The owner is from a low-income family, they often had to borrow money from others to buy dog food for Bagel or fed her leftover human food.

The owner has a very traditional concept of keeping a dog, thinking that it is enough to just provide a dog house, give her food, and tie her on a leash so that she won't run away. We found out that not only did Bagel have signs of pre-kidney disease, her teeth were rotten, and she has heartworms. After trying to educate the owners, we believed that even if they wanted to, due to their financial situation Bagel’s living conditions would not improve. We decided to bring Bagel back with us and put her up for adoption.

Bagel is very gentle, but timid of strangers. The first time we met her, she would dodge away if you tried to touch her. However, after she settled down in our foster's home, Bagel has become quite attached to people. She likes to follow people around, but rests quietly at home when the foster goes off to work.

At first Bagel was scared to sleep in the dog bed prepared for her at the foster home and hid under the table to rest. But Bagel has improved quickly! With the foster's patient company and guidance, she now enjoys sleeping in the dog bed! She even likes to play catch!

However, because Bagel is mid-age, and because of her past living conditions, she needs some time to recover from her medical conditions. We hope that there will be a family who is willing to accompany Bagel through her treatments and give her a safe loving new home!
